The Faculty of Finance held the first Finance Seminar on the afternoon of September 2 in the academic year of 2021-2022. Mr. Kai Ming Ip, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Xiamen International Bank, Senior Adviser to the Board of Directors of Luso International Bank Ltd., was invited as a guest speaker and made a speech themed "Bank and Me" via Zoom. Dean Adrian Cheung and Associate Dean Eva Khong of the Faculty of Finance of the City University of Macau attended the seminar. Due to the pandemic, all students joined the seminar via Zoom.
Mr. Ip provided an overview of the banking industry, including its distinctiveness, functions, four main stakeholders, as well as the profit model. In addition, by comparing the traditional banking business with the diversified business of modern banking, it reflects the significant development of the modern banking industry. Mr. Ip summed up five key factors underpinning the success of the bank, including good corporate governance, dedicated and stable teams, brilliant strategies, advanced technologies, and proper incentive mechanisms. Mr. Ip pointed out that AI artificial intelligence, Blockchain, Cloud computing, Big Data and 5G have driven the continuous innovation of global financial services, and also changed the business model and users’ expectations for financial services. Mr. Ip introduced that Luso Bank has always been aiming to develop into a leading financial company and has become a benchmark for Macau’s banking industry in terms of financial technology. China’s financial industry has grown from scratch and developed prosperously over three decades. In terms of financial technology application, China is in the leading position in the world.
Mr. Ip experienced the reform and opening-up, Macau’s return to the motherland and two financial turmoils during his career. Regardless of prosperity or adversity in his career, Mr. Ip upholds his own philosophy of life, always enjoys his work, and devotes himself to his career. At the same time, he balances his life and work.
In the Q & A section, Mr. Ip answered each question from students and encouraged students to continuously study new financial technology in order to equip themselves for future careers. Students were benefiting from the lecture and cherished the opportunity to communicate with senior executives in the financial industry.
