On April 9, 2024, Faculty of Finance at City University of Macau organized the fourteenth Finance Salon (2023-2024) at the Taipa campus. The seminar was hosted by Professor Jamie Tong from Shanghai University. She delivered a lecture on her research paper titled “CEO Contract Length and Contract Renewal: Impression Management of CSR Engagement”. This article examines the impact of the length of a company's chief executive officer (CEO) contract on corporate social responsibility (CSR). CEOs with shorter initial contract lengths are more likely than other CEOs to engage in impression management by making CSR efforts to impress their boards of directors. While CSR engagement generally enhances the probability of the CEO's contract renewal, this effect is particularly strong for CEOs with shorter contracts. Nevertheless, firms with less busy boards are less likely than firms with busy boards to renew CEO contracts based on CSR efforts.
Professor Tong is a distinguished professor of accounting currently at SILC Business School, Shanghai University. Her research focuses on financial accounting, corporate governance and corporate strategy. She has published articles in journals such as Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Academy of Management Journal, Production and Operations Management.
At this Finance Salon, Professor Tong had in-depth exchanges with teachers and students of Faculty of Finance, bringing new academic discoveries about corporate governance mechanisms and corporate social responsibility to us. The Finance Salon organized by Faculty of Finance at City University of Macau serves as a platform for exchanging academic ideas and fostering academic awareness. With finance as the main focus, we invite senior scholars/experts from academia and the financial industry to engage in research discussions on cutting-edge topics and share industry development trends, aiming to provide a fresh academic experience and thinking model for CityU students and members of the faculty. Through activities like the Finance Salon, we hope to offer graduate students a better academic platform, encouraging further exploration and research on academic issues.
