To enhance the academic writing and presentation skills of graduate students, the Faculty of Finance at the City University of Macau organized the first Postgraduate Academic Salon in 2023-2024 academic year on November 15, 2023, at the Taipa campus in room L207. The seminar was hosted by Dr. Hua Junyi from the Faculty of Finance, and the featured presentation was given by doctoral student Yin Peiyan and Professor Zhou Yonghong from the Faculty of Finance at the City University of Macau. Their latest collaborative research paper with the title "Long-term Impact of Exposure to a Financial Crisis in Early Career Life" examined the influence of early-career individuals' experience of financial crises on their future financial satisfaction.
The study employed a cohort difference-in-differences (DID) approach to examine the impact of individuals' early experiences of financial crises on their future financial satisfaction. The research findings indicated that experiencing a financial crisis during the early stages of one's career enhances individual financial satisfaction. The study distinguished between the effects of different external shocks experienced by individuals in their early lives and supplemented existing research on the long-term impacts of financial crises. This effect remained significant even after controlling for other non-financial events and exhibited heterogeneity across national characteristics. During the event, Assistant Professor Hua Junyi provided comments on the study, offering suggestions on research topic selection, institutional background, empirical strategies, and potential extensions. Assistant Professor Ling Yun provided relevant suggestions from both robustness testing and placebo testing perspectives. The lively atmosphere, active participation, and enthusiastic discussions contributed to the resounding success of the first Postgraduate Academic Salon in this academic year.
The Academic Salon organized by the Faculty of Finance at the City University of Macau serves as a platform for exchanging academic ideas and fostering academic awareness. With finance as the main focus, we invite senior experts from academia and the financial industry to engage in research discussions on cutting-edge topics and share industry development trends, aiming to provide a fresh academic experience and thinking model for CityU students and members of the faculty. Through activities like the Academic Salon, we hope to offer graduate students a better academic platform, encouraging further exploration and research on academic issues.
