Postgraduate New Student Orientation for the Academic Year 2024-2025 at the Faculty of Finance

To help new students integrate into the faculty community and familiarize themselves with various aspects of campus life, academic activities, and student services, the Faculty of Finance held an new students orientation session for postgraduate freshmen on September 4. The event was attended by Dean Adrian Cheung, Professor Zhou Yonghong, Course Coordinator of PhD Program, Associate Professor Yang Ting, Course Coordinator of Master's Degree Program and several other faculty members from the Faculty of Finance.

 

First of all, Dean Cheung delivered a welcome speech to the new students, briefly introducing the development history of the Faculty of Finance, the teaching evaluations, and the distinctive features of its programs. He also outlined the future development plans of the faculty. In recent years, the academic standards and teaching quality of the faculty have been continuously improving, gaining international recognition. He specifically mentioned the faculty's active development of new programs, including the newly introduced master’s program in FinTech this academic year, and the upcoming PhD program in Economics currently under preparation. Dean Cheung emphasized the faculty's commitment to further enhancing academic standards and teaching quality, aiming to provide students with the best possible learning environment and resources. He encouraged students to integrate into and actively participate in the faculty’s ongoing development.

 

Next, Professor Zhou, course coordinator of PhD program, provided a detailed introduction to the PhD program in Finance, including the credit requirements and thesis publication criteria. He encouraged students to actively participate in academic seminars organized by the faculty to enhance their learning experience, stay informed about industry trends and master mainstream analytical methods and skills. Professor Zhou also advised the new students to focus on academic research, emphasizing the importance of extensive reading and the effective use of professional tools and methodologies.

Associate Professor Yang Ting, course coordinator of master’s degree program, introduced the master’s degree program in Finance and highlighted the mutual selection process between the faculty and students, expressing high expectations for the new students. He then provided a detailed explanation of the required and elective courses, as well as the thesis completion process. He also shared statistics on the program’s enrollment numbers and graduation rates from previous years, encouraging students to make full use of the faculty’s learning resources, including faculty members, academic journals, databases, and financial laboratories, to achieve their best possible results.

 

Dean Cheung introduced each faculty member to the new students, providing a deeper understanding of their academic research areas and administrative roles. During the Q&A session, the new students actively asked questions, and the Dean and faculty members were enthusiastic in their responses. In closing, Dean Cheung encouraged the new students to achieve excellent academic results and expressed his hope that they will shine brightly in the future. The orientation not only helped the new students gain a comprehensive understanding of the structure and operations of the Faculty of Finance but also strengthened the connection between faculty and students. The Faculty of Finance wishes the new students great success in their academic journey and encourages them to strive continuously in their studies.
