Dr Toa Ka Ieong, Chief Public Mission Officer of Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited was invited by the Faculty of Finance to speak on “Innovation and Future Development of FinTech” at an academic seminar attended by postgraduate students of our Finance program. Dr Toa cited the wide application of Alipay and WeChat pay and the rapid increase in the prices of Bitcoins to arouse interest in FinTech. He pointed out that while FinTech was at its initial stage of development, the number of FinTech companies already reached 7,000 globally and the number kept rising, the investment amount in FinTech was ever growing, the presence of FinTech companies could be seen in different areas and Chinese FinTech companies had the highest value in the world. On the other hand, Dr Toa said, although FinTech, best exemplified by Blockchain, was changing the world in a revolutionary way, its development was still at a fledgling stage. After presenting predications about the development of FinTech, Dr Toa used the development of FinTech in Hong Kong as an example to talk about how a government could assist companies in developing FinTech by adopting innovative measures such as supporting the development of Maker and organizing competitions.
During the seminar, postgraduate students raised many questions and Dr Toa Ka Ieong answered in detail the questions of “issues of concern for postgraduate studies against the background of FinTech development” and “the ways entrepreneurs should cope with the FinTechn development” and provided valuable insight.
