CityU hosts seminar on urban economic research and cooperation in Greater Bay Area and training of economic and management personnel to promote academic exchanges and discipline development

The City University of Macau (CityU) hosted the Seminar on Urban Economic Research and Cooperation in the Greater Bay Area and Training of Economic and Management Personnel at the Cultural Centre, Taipa campus, today (April 11th). The seminar aimed to promote exchanges with mainland universities and institutions, enhance academic levels, and stimulate innovation to better participate in the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Distinguished scholars from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Sun Yat-sen University, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and Central South University delivered keynote speeches and interacted with faculty and students, providing valuable insights into urban economic research and cooperation in the region.

In his speech, Rector Jun Liu warmly welcomed attendees to the Seminar on Urban Economic Research and Cooperation in the Greater Bay Area and Training of Economic and Management Personnel, and emphasized CityU’s commitment to promoting academic exchange and collaboration with mainland institutions of higher education. Rector Liu noted that the Faculty of Finance is the first of its kind in the Greater Bay Area, and has been engaged in frontier research and social services to support Macao’s economic diversification and national financial reform through the development of innovative talents. He expressed his hope that the seminar would provide valuable opportunities for faculty and students to broaden their horizons and learn new ideas and perspectives from experts in their fields.

 

The keynote session of the seminar was chaired by Prof. Zhou Yonghong from the Faculty of Finance at CityU. Distinguished Professor Lu Ming of the Antai School of Economics and Management at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Executive Director of the Shanghai Institute for National Economy, delivered a keynote speech on Chinese modernization and city development. Prof. Lu emphasized that China is entering a new phase of development with a new development pattern, and expressed his hope that future metropolitan clusters will contribute to the common prosperity of the people.

During the seminar, Prof. Zhang Li, Associate Dean of the International School of Business and Finance at Sun Yat-sen University, provided an overview of the land market and urban renewal development of cities within the Greater Bay Area. Prof. Zhang emphasized that urban renewal could improve the overall quality of cities, and advised attendees to consider hybrid utilization of land and space, as well as promote flexibility in the management of land use, to cater to the market demand of the integration development of manufacturing and service industries.

Prof. Jiang Feitao, Director of the Institute of Industrial Economics at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, shared his research findings on industrial economics during the seminar, and discussed the executive mechanism of relevant policies and their impact. Prof. Jiang emphasized that policy execution is key to its success, and that the mechanism is key to its effectiveness.

Associate Professor Li Xiaoping from the School of Business at Central South University shared her experience in research topic selection. She provided detailed insights into the nature of academic articles, how to choose a topic, literature review, research methodology, and how to complete a high-quality academic paper.

The Q&A session was moderated by Prof. Adrian Cheung Wai Kong, Dean of the Faculty of Finance at CityU. During the session, experts and scholars, along with representatives from the Faculty of Finance, engaged in in-depth discussions on the future development of the faculty and potential cooperation between CityU and mainland universities and institutions. The seminar provided a valuable platform for students and faculty to gain insights into urban economic development, industrial economic patterns, and academic frontier topics in the Greater Bay Area, as well as to draw on the valuable experiences of high-level research and talent cultivation in the area. Furthermore, the seminar aimed to promote discipline development in economics, finance, and related fields at CityU. Among the participants were Associate Dean Eva Khong Yueng Wah from Faculty of Finance, as well as faculty members: Lou Shiyan, Xue Lifei, and Lamont Yu Bo.
