On December 1, 2023, the Faculty of Finance at the City University of Macau organized the seventh academic salon (2023-2024) at the Taipa campus. The seminar was hosted by Dr. Qiang Li from Guangzhou University. Dr. Li Qiang delivered a lecture on his working paper titled "The brother's penalty: boy preference and girls' health in China."

The paper employed instrumental variable methods and data from the Chinese Family Panel Studies, revealing significant punitive effects of having an elder brother on the height, birth weight, and self-reported health status of second-born girls. In contrast, the presence of a younger brother had a significant punitive effect on the height and self-reported health status of the elder sister, without affecting her birth weight. These findings suggest that gender discrimination within families adversely affects the health conditions of girls.

Dr. Qiang Li is currently an Associate Professor at the School of Public Administration, Guangzhou University, and holds the position of Secretary at the Institute of Rural Revitalization. His research interests are primarily focused on labor economics and political economics. His research was published in reputable journals such as Economic Modeling (EM), Journal of Happiness Studies (JHS), European Journal of Health Economics (EJHE), and China Economic Review (CER). The academic salon hosted by Dr. Qiang Li brought valuable academic exchange and discussion to the Faculty of Finance at the City University of Macau.

The Academic Salon organized by the Faculty of Finance at the City University of Macau serves as a platform for exchanging academic ideas and fostering academic awareness. With finance as the main focus, we invite senior experts from academia and the financial industry to engage in research discussions on cutting-edge topics and share industry development trends, aiming to provide a fresh academic experience and thinking model for CityU students and members of the faculty. Through activities like the Academic Salon, we hope to offer graduate students a better academic platform, encouraging further exploration and research on academic issues.
