On July 26, 2024, Faculty of Finance at City University of Macau organized the twenty-third Finance Salon (2023-2024) at the Taipa campus. The salon was delivered by Professor Feng-Sheng Chien from Fuzhou University of International Studies and Trade. His research paper titled "Competitive Modes and Estimation of Ultimate Bound Sets for a Chaotic Dynamical Financial System". This article examines the role of competitive modes in generating chaotic behavior in financial dynamic systems. Such events are important given the plunging or volatile behavior of the stock market. Competitive mode is a great alternative to fixed-point analysis. The article presents a numerical analysis of mode frequencies and attractor properties. Furthermore, using analytical methods and Lagrangian optimization, the article is able to calculate the bound sets of chaotic financial systems. The method proposed in this paper is simpler and more accurate than other methods that implicitly calculate the boundary. The estimation of the bound sets can be used to study chaotic synchronization.

Professor Chien is a member of the senior talent program of Fujian Province. He currently serves as the dean of the School of Finance at Fuzhou University of International Studies and Trade and the director of the Carbon Economic Research Center. He is also a reviewer of QS World University Rankings (QS World University Rankings), and a special topic reviewer (energy) of a first-class international journal called NATURE. He is included to the 2023 "World's Top 2% Scientists 2022" released by Stanford University in the United States, and the “Global 1% Highly-Cited Scholar” by Clarivate. He has published more than 70 articles in top international journals (JCR: Q1 and Q2) and top Chinese journals (the Chinese Academy of Sciences: Q1) out of which more than 30 articles are highly cited papers.

During this Finance Salon, Professor Chien had a friendly academic interaction with teachers and students of the Faculty of Finance. The Finance Salon organized by Faculty of Finance at City University of Macau serves as a platform for exchanging academic ideas and fostering academic awareness. With finance as the main focus, we invite senior scholars/experts from academia and the financial industry to engage in research discussions on cutting-edge topics and share industry development trends, aiming to provide a fresh academic experience and thinking model for CityU students and members of the faculty. Through activities like the Finance Salon, we hope to offer graduate students a better academic platform, encouraging further exploration and research on academic issues.
