From November 30 to December 1, 2024, the 24th Annual Conference of Chinese Economics was held at Peking University. The conference was jointly organized by the Secretariat of the Annual Conference of Chinese Economics and the National Development Research Institute of Peking University. Yin Pei Yan, a PhD candidate from the Faculty of Finance of City University of Macau, was invited to participate and gave a paper presentation in the Financial Economics Forum session.
On November 30, 2024, in the afternoon session of Financial Economy Session (3), moderated by Prof. Ni Hongfu from the University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Dr. Peiyan Yin, a PhD student from the Faculty of Finance of the City University of Macau, presented his research results with his supervisor Yonghong Zhou, entitled “Extreme Precipitation, Awareness of Compassion and Corporate Responsibility: Evidence from China.” The study examined the significant impact of extreme weather on corporate performance, focusing on the impact of extreme precipitation on corporate social responsibility. Analyzing a sample of A-share listed companies in China between 2010 and 2020, the study found that an increase in the frequency of extreme precipitation increased corporate environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance by about 66 points. The effect is mediated by companies' focus on employee welfare and community involvement. Heterogeneity analyses show that this effect is more pronounced in high-tech, high-pollution, and state-owned firms. This study is the first to examine the impact of extreme precipitation on firm performance, highlighting the role of increased public compassion in driving this effect.
