On April 30, 2026, the Faculty of Finance at City University of Macau held a finance seminar at Ho Yin Conference Center on Taipa Campus. The seminar featured Mr. Iek Meng Sun, technician from the Dissemination and Documentation Division of the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) of Macau, was invited as the keynote speaker. The seminar focused on the theme "Workshop on Accessing Official Statistical Data". Distinguished guests included Ms. Weng Si U, Head of the Dissemination and Documentation Division of DSEC, as well as Dean Adrian Cheung and Associate Dean Eva Khong of the Faculty of Finance.

During the seminar, Mr. Iek Meng Sun provided a detailed introduction to the official statistical system of Macau. He pointed out that within Macau’s official statistical framework, the Monetary Authority of Macau is responsible for statistics in the areas of finance, currency, exchange rates, insurance, and banking. Meanwhile, DSEC oversees over 60 statistical projects annually, covering areas such as population, employment, economy, prices, and tourism. Data published by DSEC and the Monetary Authority of Macau are considered “official statistics” and are internationally comparable. Mr. Sun guided students to use the DSEC mobile application on-site to search for the latest statistical data through the “Time Series Database”. The app also provides additional features such as downloading statistical publications, a statistical encyclopedia, online customer service, and a WeChat public account, making it easier for students to continuously access data.

The seminar also highlighted the “2026 By-Census”, scheduled to be conducted from July to August 2026. The survey adopts a 1/9 sampling ratio and is expected to cover approximately 26,000 units, including student dormitories, staff dormitories, and the maritime population. Survey data includes educational attainment, economic status, and employment conditions. In addition, to promote the 2026 By-Census, DSEC is organizing the “The 8th Inter-University Statistical Project Competition – Short Video Competition on the 2026 By-Census”. Participants must create an original 60-second short video themed around the 2026 By-Census. The competition is open to Macau students enrolled in full-time programs at overseas higher education institutions, as well as Macau and non-Macau students enrolled in full-time programs at local higher education institutions. Mr. Sun emphasized that all videos must be original and entirely generated by artificial intelligence is prohibited.

During the Q&A session, students actively raised questions regarding data retrieval, competition requirements, and guidelines, and Mr. Sun answered each question thoroughly. Dean Adrian Cheung and Associate Dean Eva Khong encouraged students to actively participate in the competition and to make good use of official data for academic research and practical applications. The seminar aimed to help students effectively access and utilize official statistical data, introduce the 2026 By-Census and the related short video competition, and enhance students’ understanding and interest in statistical work. Mr. Sun provided valuable information and guidance. The faculty and students of the Faculty of Finance expressed their gratitude to Ms. Weng Si U and Mr. Iek Meng Sun from DSEC for conducting this practical workshop. Students found the session highly beneficial and gained a deeper understanding of the work of the Statistics and Census Service of Macau.
