During the coronavirus epidemic, the Faculty of Finance of City University of Macau maintains the principle of "Keep learning" and continues to launch online lectures about finance. On the afternoon of 27 February, Professor Tang Shiqi, the executive director of the Hengqin Innovative Financial Research Institute, was invited to make a speech titled "China is Ready for Central Bank Digital Currency Issuance". The lecture was hosted by Associate Dean Khong Yueng Wah of the Faculty of Finance, and the teachers and the students attended the lecture through the online platform.
According to Professor Tang, the Central Bank digital currency has attracted wide attention in recent years, and digital currency will influence the daily life of Chinese people and penetrate into all domains. With his abundant experience, Professor Tang shared the expertise on the position, significance, issuance and development of Chinese Central Bank digital currency. Aside from analysing the impacts of digital currency on macroscopic and microscopic economy and the currency-operating institutions, he predicted the outlook and development trend of digital currency and the challenges and opportunities in the use of digital currency and talked about the differences between digital currency and the electronic payments like Alipay. The students were so interested in digital currency that they raised many questions. Professor Tang answered all these questions and praised the students for their concentration, good questions and great ideas. Finally, he encouraged the students to be clear about the development trend of digital currency and prepare themselves for it.
