On the afternoon of 4 November 2021, the Faculty of Finance of the City University of Macau (CityU Macau) held the Finance Seminar Series [8]—[Hengqin-Macau Cross Border Finance Seminar] (2) on “Exploration of Cross-Border Insurance Cooperation in Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone”—at the Ho Yin Convention Centre. Mr Lan Yadong, Chairman of Hengqin Life Insurance Co., Ltd., was invited to preside over the seminar and share his views on the theme. The seminar was attended by Dean Cheung Wai Kong and Associate Dean Khong Yueng Wah of the Faculty of Finance of CityU Macau.

Mr Lan first introduced the financial situation and prospects of the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin (the Cooperation Zone) to the students and reviewed major events related to the Cooperation Zone from 2018 to 2021. Chairman Lan compared the Cooperation Zone’s financial data in 2009 with that in 2020. The result showed that the current cross-border cooperation between Hengqin and Macao has facilitated investment and financing in Guangdong and Macao through financial innovation, cross-border finance has promoted financial interconnectivity between Hengqin and Macao, and industry funds that have supported investment in Macao have also accelerated financial reform and innovation in the Greater Bay Area.

Mr Lan then moved on to introduce nine measures that Hengqin Life Insurance Co., Ltd. takes to serve the Cooperation Zone, including gathering high-end talent, building an innovation and entrepreneurship base, driving insurance product innovation, driving insurance service innovation, setting up special equity funds, building an insurance asset management platform in the Cooperation Zone, forming a professional and efficient broker team, establishing an insurance technology platform, and supporting public welfare and people’s livelihoods in the Cooperation Zone. In the end, Chairman Lan introduced the research topic “cross-border household finance”, emphasizing that cross-border household finance is the starting point for the development of featured financial services in the Cooperation Zone. Then he shared the possible research fields and directions concerning this research topic and had a discussion with the students.

At the end of the seminar, students eagerly posed relevant questions. Chairman Lan patiently answered the questions in detail and had a lively discussion with them. Through the seminar, the students gained a deeper understanding of development opportunities for the insurance industry in the Greater Bay Area. Chairman Lan also invited the students of CityU Macau to visit Hengqin Life Insurance Co., Ltd. once the pandemic eases off and the border is reopened.
