City University of Macau cooperates with the University of Coimbra in Portugal to nurture elites

On the afternoon of 10 November 2021, the Faculty of Finance of the City University of Macau (CityU Macau) and the University of Coimbra in Portugal jointly held the “City University of Macau and University of Coimbra’s Elite Study Program in Europe – Diploma of Advanced Studies in Economic International Relations – Information Session for Year 2022 Student Intakes”. The information session was attended by Rector Jun Liu of CityU Macau, Dean Cheung Wai Kong of the Faculty of Finance, and Programme Coordinator of the Advanced Studies Diploma of the University of Coimbra in Portugal Derio Chan.

 

Rector Jun Liu extended a warm welcome and heartfelt appreciation to the guests and students in his speech. He mentioned that the University of Coimbra in Portugal, as one of the oldest universities in the world, boasts outstanding academic achievements with an international academic atmosphere, and has fostered many excellent talent for Portugal and the world. Owing to the support of the University of Coimbra as well as the efforts of Mr Derio Chan and the colleagues of CityU Macau, the programme was launched successfully, providing a new platform for students to learn and experience Portuguese and European culture. CityU Macau will continuously broaden the international perspectives and learning opportunities of its faculty members and students, and create an international learning and exchange environment to cultivate high-end talent with diverse cultural backgrounds.

 

Dean Cheung Wai Kong, when introducing the University of Coimbra, mentioned that as a university regarded as a World Heritage site, the University of Coimbra not only has profound cultural significance but also leads the world in education and research achievements. The Faculty of Economics, one of many faculties of the University of Coimbra, is CityU Macau’s partner on the programme. The Faculty is blessed with over 2,000 students and more than 100 excellent teaching staff from over 100 countries, and is equipped with advanced teaching facilities and prominent research resources. Dean Cheung expressed his hope that the programme will provide students with opportunities to learn, further their studies and gain international learning experience in the world-renowned university, thus helping them enrich themselves and make achievements in their studies.

Mr Derio Chan introduced the study plan, curriculum and admission requirements of the programme in detail, and mentioned that the programme mainly offers courses in international relations and political economy, together with elective courses in related disciplines at the University of Coimbra, which will assist students in enriching their learning plans and gaining a deeper understanding of Portuguese and European culture. Mr Chan expressed his expectation that through the programme students will enjoy first-class teaching facilities and surroundings and learn from experts and scholars in the fields, improve their professional and academic levels, cultivate multicultural ways of thinking, thus become bilingual and bicultural high-end talent.

At the end, Dean Cheung and Mr Chan answered questions from the students, and welcomed students and external participants of CityU Macau to ask the Faculty of Finance about the programme.
