The Faculty of Finance of CityU Macau has enrolled a record number of students in the 2022-2023 academic year, with 283 undergraduate students admitted. In order to help the new students to adapt to university life as soon as possible, and to understand the courses and activities of the Faculty, the Faculty held an orientation session for new undergraduate students on September 22 at the Cultural Centre, attended by Dean Adrian Cheung, Associate Dean Eva Khong, Course Coordinator of Postgraduate Program Yonghong Zhou, Course Coordinator of BAE Program Derick Lin and teachers of the Faculty.
To begin with, Dean Adrian Cheung welcomed all the new students and gave a brief introduction to the development of the Faculty. The academic level and teaching quality of the Faculty have been continuously improved in recent years, which has been widely recognized by the society. He encouraged students to develop a proactive attitude and actively participate in practical activities both inside and outside the University during the four-year time. And the teachers of the Faculty will do their best to help every student. He then introduced the academic staff and administrative staff of the Faculty one by one, so that the students can be more familiar with the academic research areas and administrative work scope of them.
Associate Dean Eva Khong warmly welcomed the new students and mentioned that the Faculty’s characteristic is to implement the model of industry-university-research cooperation to cultivate financial talents. At present, the Faculty is cooperating with the financial industry in Macao and Hengqin in many aspects, such as inviting experts and scholars or corporate executives to share with students, planning visiting activities, providing summer field work opportunities, etc., to show that the Faculty takes experiential learning as the core of teaching, and at the same time implements academic-research cooperation with the industry to jointly cultivate Macao financial talents. The Faculty provides students with a platform for diversified development, hoping to cultivate more modern financial talents with professional financial knowledge, a forward-looking and international vision for the development of the Greater Bay Area.
Later, Dr. Derick Lin, Course Coordinator of BAE Program, briefly introduced the development of the bachelor's degree program in applied economics and introduced in detail the course features and subject settings, including theoretical foundation courses, applied skills and methods courses, and theoretical application courses. Finance Elite Cohort is an English-medium class in the undergraduate program. He clearly explained the two majors that students can choose in the coming learning pathway: finance and economics, and introduced the characteristics and detailed the subject setting and learning content of each field. In addition, he also introduced the relevant certificates of finance and the exchange program between the Faculty and cooperative colleges and universities, encouraging students to seize the four years of study time and strive to participate in academic exchange activities, so as to better equip themselves and continue to improve their knowledge and professional skills.
Lastly, Professor Yonghong Zhou, Course Coordinator of Graduate Program, stated that the undergraduate program focuses on learning and experience, and suggested that students can start considering for future studies or career planning. He also briefly introduced the postgraduate programs of the Faculty and also the master’s programs for students to apply for in the future. The postgraduate program focused on the study of cutting-edge theories of international finance, which can improve financial research and practical ability, hoping to provide students with a choice to continue their further education in the future. He hoped the students can grasp the rich support from the teachers and software facilities of the Faculty, fully feel the learning atmosphere of Macao and CityU Macao through different academic experience activities, and wish the new undergraduate students enjoy the coming four years of time.
The orientation event guided the new students to gradually adapt to university life, which also promoted the establishment of a good relationship between students and teachers, and helped them to conceive of a fulfilling and enjoyable learning time on campus in the future. Associate Professor Yinggui Wang, Associate Professor Gavin Wu, Associate Professor Shiyan Lou, Assistant Professor Liu Lu, Assistant Professor Lifei Xue, Assistant Professor Lamont Yu, Assistant Professor Bo Yu, Assistant Professor Di Li, Assistant Professor Lin Deng and Lecturer Simon Sou also attended the orientation.
